Epistar HVLED Monthly Shipment Doubles in 2013

<img src="http://www.renesola.us/f/2015/01/19/020126xNSJ8.jpg" width="400" height="400" alt=""/>

As LED lighting application matures, HVLED technology developed by Taiwanese LED manufacturer Epistar is showing fruits of success. The smaller sized HVLED has better heat dissipation and advantageous over-drive capabilities that can lower driver IC costs. Epistar revealed it is using HVLED products in several projects, and shipments have increased by more than twofolds in 2013 compared to the same period in 2012. Epistar has been actively setting up its strategy in the LED lighting market, and has released three secret weapons to grab market share, which includes the package free Embedded LED Chip (ELC), HVLED and creative Filament.

Epistar is the first company to mass produce high voltage HVLED chips. The company has developed multi-unit, multijunction substrates, high voltage drivers with different array designs. By using leadframe designs, HVLED chips have excellent electrical characteristics, and diverse lighting applications and flexibility. HVLED's is suitable for high voltage application market, due to its over-drive capacity and better heat dissipation capabilities that can reduce driver IC costs.

The HVLED has just been released, but the overall performance has been fairly good, especially in streetlight and tube applications, said Hsieh Ming-Hsun, VP, R&D, Epistar. Many projects are currently using HVLED products, and as lighting demands increase, Epistar HVLED products monthly shipments have doubled to triple in 2013 compared to 2012.

LED Manufacturers Under Pricing Pressure Rush into Package Free Chip

ReneSola 250W Polycrystalline Panels,India
The LED industry after entering into the lighting era still continues to face pressure to lower prices. LED manufacturers have thus begun competitively pushing their way into package free chip development. Manufacturers like Philips Lumileds, Toshiba, TSMS Solid State Lighting, Epistar, and Formosa Epitaxy have already begun promoting package free chip products. After the emergence of ELC (Embedded LED Chip) technology and PFC (Package Free Chip) in the market and flip chip usage in high powered LED packaging component LUXEON Q, package free chip technology is unsurprisingly the focal point of the industry in 2013. The production process for LED lighting products is separated into levels from 0 to 5. Level 0 is epitaxial and chip production, level 1 is LED chip packaging, level 2 is welding the LED on to PCB, level 3 is the LED mold, level 4 lighting source, and lastly level 5 is the lighting system. Package free chip production will eliminate level 1. Philips Lumileds has expanded its production line in 2013.

Aside from medium and low powered products, the company has also recently launched high powered LED packaging component LUXEON Q. This is Philips Lumileds first time using flip-chip technology to develop high powered LEDs as well as use Philips Chip Scale Package technology. The newly launched LUXEON Q by Philips Lumileds uses CSP and flip chip technology to reach high powered and high luminosity performance. Philips Lumileds older generation thin-film flip-chip technology needs sapphire substrate to be removed during the final stage of production. However the new generation flip-chip used in LEXEON Q does not require the substrate to be removed at all. LUXEON Q directly replaced 3535 series packaging products on the market. Its field of application includes high bay lights, recessed lighting, wall lighting, replacement bulbs, and specialty lighting.

Taiwanese LED chip manufacturers are equally as aggressive in package free chip product development. New ELC products by Epistar use semi conductor manufacturing and have eliminated level 1 from the production process. Elimination of level 1 includes getting rid of lead frames and bonding wire only leaving behind the use of phosphor and packaging resin for chips which can be applied directly on SMT. Epistar ELC products have already entered into the backlight supply chain and will also become part of the lighting market in the future. Formosa Epitaxy has also already developed PFC package free products where chips that use flip chips do not require the use of bonding wire. PFC package free chip products have an increased luminosity rate of 200ml/W and beam angle of 300 degrees. Also, because it does not require the use of secondary optics, consumption and costs are reduced.

CLTC Provides Criteria for Blue Light Use to Quell Market Fears

ReneSola 24W LED Tube,1/2 Aluminum + 1/2 Plastic,3000K Non-Dimmable,China
The possible blue light hazards in LEDs on the eyes have become a hot global topic. The expanding application field for LED lighting has raised consumer awareness towards the possible risks of blue LEDs. In order to clarify the consumers misgivings towards LED lighting products, the China National Lighting Fitting Quality Supervision Testing Center (CLTC) has released a report addressing the dangers of blue lights in LEDs. The CLTC advises that single LED package components with 1W power must strengthen structural protection measures and that color temperature for indoor lighting must not surpass 4000K. CLTC pointed out that the danger of blue light is not only present in LEDs, during the 20th Annual Cross-Strait Lighting Technology and Marketing Seminar.

Metal halide lamps and certain florescent lamps also have concerns towards blue light risks in the past. Blue light is important in the formation of white light. White light cannot exist without blue light. Usage, product quality, and degree of safety are all highly related. The difference between blue light hazards and overexposure The blue light hazards created by LED lighting products have caused the market to go into shock when the word ";blue" is mentioned. The definition of blue light hazard according to CLTC is that when radiance standards reach group 2 or 3, the eye can be injured in a short period of time. Group 2 and 3 are categorized as moderate risk (group 2) and high risk (group 3). For group 2, radiance reaches &le;4&times;106W&bull;m-2&bull;sr-1 and luminaries will not cause dangers from unsuitable glare or color temperature. Group 3 luminaires has a radiance of &le;4&times;106W&bull;m-2&bull;sr-1 and can cause instant damage. The difference between blue light overexposure and blue light hazards as explained by the CLTC is that the ";overexposure" of light towards human physiology goes unnoticed for months or even years before the effects on the circadian rhythm are apparent.

However, there is currently no corresponding assessment standard. How to avoid the effects of blue light hazards and overexposure According to a survey by CLTC, through random sampling, one product placed under abnormal condition tests reached risk group 2. A single LED component in this product had a power level of 1W. This type of LED package has high lumens per area. If one is to stare directly at this type of light source, their eyes could be exposed to blue light hazard. Therefore, it is advised that use of 1W LED package components must use a diffusion cover or similar structural protection measures, as well as warning labels. Additionally, the quality of phosphor coating on blue LED chips is also a huge factor to its effects on health.

The poor quality of phosphor allocation and coating for LED products from unclear backgrounds can reach color temperatures as high as 6500K and even 100,000K. Long term use of this type of product can have effect on one's circadian rhythm. Overexposure can affect sleep, circadian rhythm, as well as weaken the immune system. CLTC therefore advises that in order to avoid the effects on one's health from long term exposure to high color temperature LED lightings, indoor lighting should not surpass a color temperature of 4000K and color rendering index to be no less than 80.

FOREPI Utilization Rates to Rise Earlier than Expected in 1Q14

Renesola TL 1kW 230V 50/60Hz Grid-tied Solar Inverter 1 MPPT+DC switch+Wi-Fi card(Web monitor),China
Affected by the traditionally low season in 4Q, Taiwan LED chip manufacturer FOREPI utilization rates were down to 60 percent. However, there is a possibility for large-sized backlight demands to rebound earlier than expected, as Korean manufacturers have decided the new TV models for 2014. FOREPI projects utilization rates might return to higher levels in 1Q14. The impact on FOREPI has been much more evident during the low backlight season in 4Q13, since backlight products account for more than half of the company's revenue.

The company's utilization rate in 4Q13 has decreased to about 60%, and consolidated revenue for October and November have also decreased to NT$ 465 million (US$ 15.67 million) and NT$ 249 million respectively. Judging from the current market condition, market demands in December will continue to be weak, and the company will not have significant revenue growth.

However, FOREPI pointed out compared to the pessimistic market outlook in November, the outlook for December was positive with potential turnaround as Korean TV manufacturers have completed decision for 2014 TV models. FOREPI noted based on order forecasts made by TV clients in 1Q14, if shipment goes smoothly there is a chance for utilization rates to return to 80 percent level. Revenue performance for 1Q14 will surpass 4Q13.

Samsung Electronics Switches Business Strategy from AMOLED Production to LCD

Rensola 70W Polycrystalline Solar Panels,China
In order to avoid saturation of the high-end smartphone market and increase market penetration in India and China, Samsung Display will reduce AMOLED panels and increase LCD panel production in 2014. Samsung Electronics wants to turn their focus to mid-market LED handsets in 2014, but this change in business strategy will have an impact on Samsung Display's business performance. ";We have to increase the supply of cheaper LCD panels instead of OLED panels with higher added value due to Samsung Electronics' business strategy," said Samsung Display, adding, ";Although the supply volume might become larger than before, it is almost sure that we cannot avoid a drop in profitability."

The average price for 3.1 inch and higher OLED panels produced by Samsung Display at the end of 3Q was US $44.6, significantly higher than US $16.48 for LCD panels. LCD profitability is four to five times higher than that of OLED, according to Business Korea. Samsung Display announced earlier this month that the company has integrated their OLED and LCD divisions. ";To respond to the rapidly changing market environment, as well as to proactively cope with the changes in management environment, we decided to shift toward an integrated system," said a Samsung Display official.

According to a report in Business Korea, Samsung Display mainly focused on AMOLED panel production with Samsung Electronic their main client, accounting for over 60 percent of its gross sales. ";Besides, Samsung Electronics has recently demanded that the supply price of AMOLED panels be cut by at least 10%, although we cannot reveal the exact number," an official at Samsung Display added.

Lighting Japan 2014: Still a Long Road Ahead for OLED Lighting

ReneSola 7W LED Bulb,3000K Non-Dimmable,China
At Lighting Japan 2014 in Tokyo Big Sight, OLED industry insiders of have noted that there is still a long way to go before the technology can become mature enough to compete with LEDs. From a designer's perspective OLED is still a very attractive technology for making aesthetic luminaires. OLEDs have the features of being light, flexible, transparent, and low temperatures, pointed out Synqroa Vice President of Development Mitsuhiro Koyama and Vice President of Marketing Jun Shimada. OLED also has a high lifetime of 10,000 hours However, high costs are still OLEDs Achilles heel, and the lighting source is still behind in energy efficiency compared to LED.

Wolfgang Gorgen, Program Manager Strategy, Business Center OLED Lighting, Philips Technologie at Lighting Japan 2014, Tokyo. (LEDinside) Speaking on OLED module GL350 Typ2, Wolfgang Gorgen, Program Manager Strategy, Business Center OLED Lighting, Philips Technologie pointed out the company was able to make significant technical breakthroughs in fields including in lumen flux, color and CRI, but still struggled with bringing efficiency on par with LEDs 50 lm/W. The OLED module currently has a luminous efficiency of 45 lm/W. The company also continues to struggle with OLED prices too. ";Improvements will be needed in organic material and substrate costs, to bring down OLED costs," said Gorgen. He also pointed OLED packaging is another essential key in lowering costs. Philips is not alone in this issue, other speakers including Acuity Brands Lighting and Synqroa also shared similar observations.

Min-hao Liu, Director of OLED Lighting Design Center, Acuity Brands Lighting at Lighting Japan 2014. (LEDinside) The reason behind OLEDs high costs is it is not as bright as LEDs. The typical OLED has a lumen range of 200 to 300 lumens. Manufacturers need to add more panels to compensate for its lower luminosity, pointed out Min-hao Liu, Director of OLED Lighting Design Center, Acuity Brands Lighting. Adding OLED panels often drive up the manufacturing costs. Thus Liu noted it is important from an economic point of view of making OLED designs double panels that emit light both ways. This is necessary as it can help cut costs, and reduce the number of panels used, said Liu. Despite the proposed good solution, Gorgen noted, as long as the market is not developed it remains difficult for manufacturers to scale up production and R&D. For now, it seems there are still several technical roadblocks for OLED to overcome before it becomes a mainstream general lighting application.
